Got Oil?

You know that story in the bible about the ten virgins? (Matthew 25) The one where five of them were wise and the other five foolish? Well I was thinking about that this morning. The parable talks about the end of times and about when the Bridegroom/Messiah appears. The five wise virgins will not only shine like lamps in the night, but also have extra oil with them just in case they need it. And of course the five foolish virgins are caught empty. They have no oil in their lamp and none in their jars even though it looked like they did.

Joel 2:31 says, The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord. So, it’s going to be darkness like we’ve never known or can even imagine. It’s going to be terrifyingly dark before He returns.

The five foolish virgins in despair beg the five wise virgins for some oil to light their lamps, but are told no, go buy some for yourself. How are they going to do that in such darkness? And what might the oil, even if it is available, cost?

There they were, keeping themselves all nice and pure, hanging on to their virginity, strutting about with the five wise virgins, and looking and sounding, well – wise. But beneath the façade they were empty and void of Light. They were full of darkness. Matthew 6:23b asks, “If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness?”

Great question. How great is the darkness within you? Do you need Light? Jesus said, I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life.”  John 8:12.

There’s only one way to get the Oil needed to light your lamp and keep it shining and that is to follow the Light of the world. How do you do that? Read, digest, accept, and live His Word. It is that simple. I promise you, if you will start and keep a relationship with the Lord Jesus you will never be without Oil or Light.

We should always be as joyful as these beautiful little ones.

I used to think the 5 wise virgins were selfish not to share, but soon realized, as you pointed out, that the oil, even the reserve oil, was not “shareable.” How can you give to someone else the experiences and joy you have received through righteous living and drawing upon the Lord for strength? Each one of us must stand on her own testimony and faith. Great insights here, Elizabeth! thanks

You’re absolutely right Gail, we can share our experiences and life in Christ by telling them all about it, but that will never equate to life for them unless they go after what we have. Thanks for joining the discussion. :-)

Really enjoyed hearing the children sing. It brings back memories of my Sunday School teaching years. Children are still eager to learn, and they love lavishly. Blessings to you, Elizabeth…

Ah, Sunday School and all the eager little children. :-)

I just loved this video of the kids fully enjoying the song. It reminded me of the scripture verse that said, we can’t see the kingdom of heaven except we see it as little children. (para) their innocence and joy are uplifting.

Blessings to you too Carol Ann. :-)
